Acer’s mkt share recently passed hardware giant Dell in the rapidly growing market for ultra mobile laptop computers, i.e. netbooks or MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices). Acer is teaming with Google to bring out an Android based handset, called “Liquid”, and it would be a good bet that Acer is looking at Google’s Chrome OS for it’s future netbook pc models.
Do MSFT and Apple have reason to worry? Well, worry or not, they both are definately going to have some serious competition in the MID/Netbook markets if Chrome OS is liked and adopted by the users of ultra portable pc’s. A Chinese netbook mfr. is rumored to be prepping a $200 7″ to 9″ lcd display netbook with Google’s Chrome OS as it’s operating system.
This is good news for more open computing in the future. MSFT and Apple want to lock you in to their device platforms, and we can’t blame them for that. But whether they worry about competition from anyone but each other is what will lead these behemoths to providing more value to us, the consumers, rather than focusing more of their efforts on locking us into their platforms.
